Looking to give a gift of navigational aid but can’t decide if a dedicated personal GPS unit or a smartphone app would do? The good news: Consumer Reports experts are finding that GPS apps can be just as capable stand-alone navigation devices. The even better news: Garmin is slashing prices for its smartphone apps and traffic services the year-end holidays.
The company announced price cuts of up to 40 percent for its Navigon navigation software for both iPhones and Google Android-powered smartphones. The holiday promotion—which lasts until Jan. 5—allows users to download and navigate U.S. maps for $30 instead of $40 (Android) or $50 (iPhone). For both U.S. and Canadian maps, Garmin will charge about $40 for its app on either iOS or Android platforms.
Garmin’s live traffic update service will also be discounted from $20 to $15. Its StreetPilot app for iPhones also drops $10—to $50 for U.S. and Canadian maps, $40 for U.S. only—during the holiday promotion.
The price cuts also extends to its recently released Navigon app for Windows Phone 7 which was available for $30 last month.
