According to the recent report from DALLAS,Deep Ellum now has two electric-vehicle charging stations, centrally located in the parking lot at the corner of Main Street and Martin Luther King.

Flanked by a fleet of eight electric vehicles, the two stations, brand name “Blink,” served as a backdrop to an unveiling on Thursday morning, with remarks by Oncor, the city, and Madison Partners, on whose parking lot they reside. Partners in the project include Oncor, the State of Texas, the City of Dallas, and ECOtality, the Phoenix-based company that sets up the stations.

A couple of TV cameras recorded the speeches, and someone who looked like the guy from Walkable Dallas-Fort Worth showed up late, though in his defense he wasn’t driving a car.

The unveiling drew representatives from other local companies who’ve either installed charging stations already or have plan to install them in the future, including the City of Garland, FrontBurner restaurants, and Hotel Palomar. Other organizations on-board include IKEA, Macy’s, and Cracker Barrel.

Debbie Dennis from Oncor said that North Texas is the perfect environment for electric vehicles, and that most people’s daily drive lies within the distance of an electric vehicle charge. Ecotality VP Greg Siorigi said the stations were installed as part of a grant the company received from the Department of Energy.

Jon Hetzel from Madison listed all of the ways in which Deep Ellum is eco-friendly — its re-use of old buildings, two DART Rail stations, etcetera — and said that Madison would give free charging for the first six months as an incentive to get people to come down and use them.

It’s a generous gesture that made me realize an obvious thing: These things cost money. Energy isn’t free, someone has to pay, but I had the silly notion that these would be public amenities, like a park or streetlights, when they’re really more like gas stations.
